"Thing 23"

This has been quite a journey. I've learned so much in the past ten weeks. Flickr is a site I will use a lot at home. Other sites I've enjoyed and have shared are Farecast, Craig's List and Judysbook. RSS feeds is something I probably won't use.
Perhaps the library will offer classes for our customers in some of the "things" we've experienced.
Thanks to the committee for organizing the challenge, your help and encouragement. I've enjoyed working with co-workers through the more difficult "things" and also helping others when I could.
It's been great fun. On to Web 3.0!

Thing # 22 Listen NJ

Oh dear. This was a lesson in frustration. Accessing and exploring the site was easy and fun. I now have two books checked out that I can't listen to. A group of co-workers tried downloading the media player. We followed the Quick Start Guide but were not allowed access. Listen NJ seems like a good idea...if you actually get to listen to your book.

Thing # 21 Podcast again

This posting was my second try linking a podcast. This way was fun and easy. I like having the player right on my blog as it's more convenient to use. I will definately explore more using Odeo.

Thing #21 Podcast

http://odeo.com/audio/18605653/view

This was my first attempt at posting a link to a podcast. It was confusing and even with help, I'm not sure how it happened.

Thing #20 You Tube & You

This was FUN! The first video I added was the Pipe Organ at Atlantic City Convention Hall. Gorgeous to listen to and to see. I tried the advanced exercise and with a little help from a co-worker was able to embed a video of my band in the 2008 NYC Tartan Day Parade.

Thing # 19 2.0 Awards

This was great fun and useful too! I already use Craig's list to successfully sell items. It's good because the listings are local. I will use Judysbook.com to find sales and coupons. I am familiar with Kayak for travel bookings but will now use Farecast also to check price predictions . I'm always checking the weather so Weatherbank will be on my list. Pipl people finder is a new source that may help me with my genealogy hobby.

Thing #18

Google Docs is great and so easy to use. Our programming will find this a great tool as we prepare our monthly calendar.

Thing #17 Play in the Sandbox

I enjoyed playing in the sandbox. I added to the favorite foods list, added a favorite place to be and was able to add my blog to the OCL Webthings Blogs.

Thing #9 Finding Feeds

I found Blogline's Search and Topix.net the easiest to use. Syndic8 was confusing and Technorati was ok. I searched herb gardening found a good site that I added to my bloglines account. I found some New Jersey Festivals using Topix.net.

Thing #16 Wikis

The video was great for explaining wikis. I found the Circ Desk schedule on the Albany County Library's staff Wiki. On the Library Success wiki I looked at Programming. Not much was posted there and it was last modified in May 06. On the OCL wiki I looked up the Jackson Township Branch and found lots of interesting information about the Township. On the Library Success wiki I found two great articles on Ways to Serve Older Adults. After looking at the history tab on a water garden wiki, and knowing anyone could edit this, I would be less willing to trust the information.

Thing #15 On Library 2.0

Libraries need constant change to meet public demands. Because of technology, the world is changing rapidly. The old way isn't always the best way. It is more comfortable for many. One of the articles stated that "rigidity breeds failure". We have to be ready to accept new ways, but I hope we always will be able to go to the library to find a good book to curl up with.

Thing #14 Technorati

The videocast wouldn't load so I didn't get to view that. I did a search for Learning 2.0 but found it confusing. I looked at "Boing Boing" cultural curiosities, and found some fun info there such as the perfect length for a pop song is 2:42 minutes. I didn't like the adds on each page. While searching a message came up " DOH! The Technorati Monster escaped again" and the search was over.

Thing #13

Very confusing. What is a cloud? The Stafford Branch is a good example of the usefullness of this site. For myself -don't think I would use it.

Thing #12 WorldCat

I like using WorldCat. Although I don't work with the request forms, I can see how useful WorldCat can be. I searched the title Ocean County:Four Centuries in the Making and was surprised to see how many distant libraries own the title.

Thing #12 NetLibrary

This was fun. I looked at Retire Happy on the home page. It was easy to move around the Table of Contents and chapters. I did a search on "knitting" and found Illustrated Knitting and Crochetting. I could help customers use this.

Thing #11 Library Thing

http://www.librarything.com/addbooks
I enjoyed this site. I found it a The J.D. Robb title I added was a popular choice. The water garden title I selected was not quite as hot an item. Using tags to organize my choices will be very helpful. This was fun

Thing #10

I added a comments to two co-worker's blogs. Quilts and animals - the best.

After reading "20 Things to Watch" by Stephen Abram, my head was spinning. The opening remarks about commuters all with eyes downcast glued to some device or other disturbed me. I find it sad to see people unable to exist without a cell phone glued to their ear. I don't need most of these things. I'd rather be in my garden.

Thing #8
I created a Blogline account and chose my 10 feeds. I might occasionally check these but wouldn't look at them every day. I did add Women's Day recipes to my blog and find that interesting and handy to check.

Rainbow over Jackson thing#6

I captured this beautiful double rainbow after a downpour this week. I had my camera ready and thought it would be fun to post. It was easy to upload the photo to Flickr but I had trouble trying to post it on my blog from home . I tried it at work and had no problem.

Jackson Branch Quilt

Staff members each made a square to complete the Jackson Branch Quilt. The center square features the Jackson Library. Other special squares are of Sparks, the Friend's logo, the OCL logo and Jackson Township's logo. This was a great team project. Our quilt can be seen in the first floor reading area.

Yippee!

I was having difficulties with Flickr. With the help of co-workers, I was able to post the photo I wanted. This time it was fun. Can't wait to do more.

Pipes and Drums thing #6

What a surprise. I found this photo of me and my band on Flickr.

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

I am finding it hard to get enough time to work on my blog. Often the instructions are confusing to me and I find that frustrating. Co-workers have been helping each other and that's a good thing. I'm looking forward to the photography "things".

Thing #3

Of the 71/2 lifelong learning habits, the hardest for me is using technology to your advantage. I am overwhelmed when I see my children and grandchildren using new devices so easily that I don't understand. I find teaching others is an easy habit. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and skills with others.
